I am not a neat freak -- far from it rather. I have lived out of a laundry basket before, left dishes in the sink longer than I should have, and shoved my kids' messes in their closets before having guests.

However, I can't resist straightening napkins at a restaurant, lining up books so they are flush with the edge of the coffee table (or at least, parallel), or insisting to button a friend's shirt pocket, etc. It's probably some mild form of OCD, not nearly as freaky as Jack Nicholson's character in "As Good As It Gets." I don't know when I even became first aware of this sudden Obsessive-Complulsive Disorder. I think, someone pointed it out to me as I absent-mindedly aligned something that was in front of me.

The funny thing is, I didn't do that for military inspections! My shoes were out of whack, my trousers on the hangers, my keyboard was not grounded correctly (gasp!!). The only thing I could do with absolute perfection was folding a t-shirt into a 6-inch square.
